Obituary For Susan Clare Antoncich
Susan Clare Graddon Antoncich was born in Yakima on October 22, 1944 to Lawrence James Graddon and Marie Clare Cartier Graddon. She passed away peacefully at Avalon Care Center in Federal Way on January 17, 2022. She is survived by her siblings Stephen (Kim) Graddon, Bruce (Darlene) Graddon, Jerry(Trese) Graddon, Gene (Bonnie) Graddon, Jim (Linda) Graddon, Ed (Carol) Graddon, and Gail (John) Saltveit, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Jeff Antoncich. Susan grew up in the South Seattle and Burien area. She attended Holy Family school for 1st and 2nd grade, then 3rd grade at Lake Burien Elementary School. She went to St. Francis school for the 4th to 8th grade, graduating in 1958. For High school, Susan was at Holy Names Academy and graduated in 1962. During these years she found her dear lifelong friends, Joan, Sandy, and Cathy.
Susan worked for many years for Dr. Dowling, MD, in Burien, running his office. After that, she was her brother Stephen’s office manager at Graddon Realty.
Ever since she was able to drive, she would spoil her younger brothers, sister, and then nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews without reservation. She took them out for meals, shopping, and trips to the ocean. She cooked dinner often for her siblings while her parents worked the evening shifts. There are many fond memories of recipes from her cookbook, 365 Ways to Cook Hamburger, with porcupine balls being a favorite!
Susan married Jeff Antoncich on January 9, 1982. They loved to go to the Washington and Oregon coasts, especially Westport, where Jeff would fish, and Susan would relax. One of their favorite traditions was to spend their anniversary at the Edgewater Hotel in Seattle where they were well known. She and Jeff continued entertaining nieces and nephews throughout their marriage. Susan and Jeff were the favorite Aunt and Uncle to so many!
Sadly, Susan suffered a catastrophic stroke in 2009. Jeff cared for her at home until 2013, when he passed away unexpectedly. She was able to be cared for at home for a couple of years, then moved into Avalon Care Center. At Avalon, Susan was very well known for her optimistic attitude and perennial smile. They seemed to give her roommates that she could watch over and keep in line. The family appreciates the personal care that she received, especially in her final days.
Susan will be forever remembered for her eternal optimism. After her stroke, she never complained and always kept faith that she would recover. She focused on her goal of getting better, adopting a small dog and taking off in a Class C motorhome to live at Westport. Even in her last month, she was describing her desired routes along the Washington and Oregon coasts. We should all be so lucky to see the good in everything that she saw.
A Funeral Mass will be held February 11, 2022 at 11am at St. John the Baptist Church in Covington (25810 156th Ave SE, Covington, WA, 98042). Father Coyne will preside at the Mass, and Deacon Jerry Graddon will give the homily. Note: masks are required. Inurnment will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery in Federal Way (37600 Pacific Highway So, Federal Way, 98003). No gathering will be held at this time. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Susan Antoncich Memorial Fund at St. Judes: http://giftfunds.stjude.org/Susan_Antoncich
