Obituary For Nellie Josephine Harrylock

Jo Harrylock went to her heavenly home on June 3rd, 2020. Thank-you for being such loving and encouraging friends to her over the years; as her family, we are truly grateful and so was she.

Nellie Josephine Morris was born in 1926 in Aberdeen, Washington to Ralph and Melita Morris. She was the younger of two children. Her family called her “Nellie Jo” in her younger years; as an adult, everyone knew her as “Jo” and her last name changed to “Harrylock” when she married.

As a girl, Jo lived in the farming and logging community of Brooklyn, Washington. During her teenage years, her family moved to Seattle in 1941. She was Valedictorian of the Class of 1943 Highline High School, and afterward graduated from the University of Washington Nursing School. As a young adult, she worked as a school nurse in Seattle, and often traveled during the summers.

In the spring of 1959, Jo met her future husband, Mel, while living in an apartment building on Alki in West Seattle. They were married five months later. Together, they grew in love, had three children (Tom, Marcia, and Jana), and eventually spent most of their years residing in Normandy Park. They invested their lives in their family, church (Des Moines Gospel Chapel), and community. Many people have been blessed by their faithfulness, friendship, and generosity.

Jo was genuinely interested in others; she engaged them in conversation, listened, and committed what was said to memory. She built many friendships through a lifelong devotion to hearing what others were saying. Even as her brain struggled in the last several months, she seemed able to put together peoples’ names and their stories. Family and friends will dearly miss her loving and attentive friendship.

Following more than a year of health struggles, Jo Harrylock found a final resting place with her Lord in heaven on June 3rd, 2020, joining her husband, Mel. Jo is survived by 3 married children, 8 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. She was 93 years old. We are very grateful for the time we had together and the eternal peace she now experiences.

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.”--Matthew 11:28

“Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”--Isaiah 40:31
