Obituary For Margaret Smalley

Born Margaret Mary Mowers in 1931 in Duluth, MN, to Fred and Nina (Jensen) Mowers, "Peggy" finished a long life journey in Des Moines, WA, not long after her 89th birthday. The family knew hardship in Duluth due to the early onset of MS of their father and his eventual hospitalization. Soon after WW II Margaret, her mother, her brothers Frank and Fred Jr.,and her sister Shirley began a new life in Rockford, IL, where they all remained for many years. All five of Margaret's children were born there, and she raised them, for the most part, alone. In 1978 she moved to the Seattle area with her aged mother and youngest daughter Heather, saying "I always felt best living by water, like in Duluth". Also, "I give up on men". She was proud of obtaining education as an adult: a Realtor's license, and an Associate's degree in Marketing. She worked for many years in the Records Dept. at the University of Washington, retiring from there. Until she was quite advanced in years she could gleefully beat all her children at Scrabble, and took joy in illegally feeding the gulls from Des Moines City pier. She is pre-deceased by her parents and her three siblings. She leaves sons Steven, Gregory, and Christopher Bea, and daughters Laura (Bea) Capellaro and Heather (Martinson) King. Also, eleven grandchildren, as well as great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She also has nieces and nephews in Illinois, Colorado, and Florida. Burial will be at Hillcrest Burial Park in Kent, WA, next to her mother Nina. Margaret loved animals, so in lieu of flowers the family requests donations be given in her name to your local Humane Society.
