Gregory Lynn Mitchell

Obituary For Gregory Lynn Mitchell

Gregory L. Mitchell was born December 7, 1950 in Fort Worth, Texas to parents Frank and Minnie Pearl Young Mitchell.

Gregory was the son of a career military man, so the family travelled extensively. He received his formal education in various places, then graduated from Derby High School in Derby, Kansas in 1969.

In 1971, Gregory enlisted in the U.S. Army and after basic training, completed two tours in Berlin, Germany. Upon return to the States, he was stationed at Fort Ord, California and later, Fort Lewis, Washington. It was there he retired, being honorably discharged. He was awarded a Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Army Occupation Medal, Good Conduct Medal and a medal for being an M16 Sharp Shooter. Having fallen in love with Washington state, that remained his home until his demise on July 27, 2020.

Gregory was preceded in death by his brother, Chauncey Edwin Mitchell and both parents, mother, Rev. Minnie Pearl Young Mitchell and father, Rev. Frank Mitchell.

He leaves to cherish his memory, one son, Roman Keith Mitchell, one sister, Greta Mitchell Alexander, several nieces and nephews, Chauncet Mitchell Thomas, Carlisle Mitchell, Damien Abney, Destani Abney June and Darius Abney, one great nephew, Zion Thomas, two great nieces, DeBorah Thomas and Selah Thomas, an aunt, Clemmie Young Tatnull, a host of cousins, a childhood friend, Travis Ray, and many other relatives and friends.

    I can remember one year Gregory played his wind instrument as we sang Christmas carols together. Another fond memory of Gregory was whenever they would arrive in Ft. Worth, he would always run from grandmother’s house down the trail to Aunt Clemmie’s house to announce that they were here!

    I remember on Christmas Eve one year, Greg played his wind instrument as we sang Christmas carols together. Another fond memory was Greg running from our grandmother’s house down the trail to Aunt Clemmie’s house to let us know he had arrived.

    Greg, I hope you always knew you were loved and missed by me and the rest of the family. You are now in God’s hands…rest well my cousin. To Greta, love you cousin, you have honored my cousin and your brother well. God bless you.

    My prayers and thoughts are with you all during this very sad time. Greg was a hard worker and a gentle soul. He is in God’s arms now and he is your guardian angel. I’m sure his mom and dad were there meeting him at the pearly gates welcoming him home. I’m so happy I got to know him and the person he was.. love y’all..
