Obituary For Robert D Upright
On Tuesday, December 21, 2021, Robert Dee Upright, a friend and neighbor of over 40 years, passed away at the age of 88. At the time of his death, Robert was living in Kent, Washington. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska on September 16, 1933, to the parents of Roy, Jr. and Dorothy Rose. Robert (Bob) was also an only child.
After graduating from high school, Bob attended the University of Washington, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1955 during the Korean War, Bob served in the United States Army as a Sargent Spec 4, Radar Technician and Trainer.
After his transfer to the reserves, he joined Boeing Aero Space corporation as an Electrical Engineer, (later gaining his Masters Degree), until his retirement.
After his retirement, Bob was a dedicated volunteer at a local Seattle business assisting in the maintenance and repair of Handicap equipment. As a longtime resident at Holly Glen Condominium’s, Bob was a board member numerous times as well as tireless volunteer, assisting in the maintenance of the exterior of the complex.
He had a passion for exploring our great United States, and photographing his adventures. Always part of a group of like minded travelers, he made many trips to locations far and near throughout Washington State. And he was also an avid outdoorsman, fishing, boating and camping, especially enjoyed traveling by train. When he wasn’t traveling he would tinker on various projects at his home.
Bob was also an avid reader. His reading topics were varied, from Louis L’Amour to Sherlock Holmes; and many books on the early war years and various religions. And of course he collected numerous text books on engineering.
He maintained a close connection with fellow engineers and while he was still able, would meet monthly with others in his field of engineering. He was also a Lifetime member of the Museum of Flight in Seattle.
Bob, though he was often very quiet, he would sometimes became outspoken about his likes and dislikes. But for the most part, he was a person who kept to himself.
He was always ready to assist a friend, when he was needed. He will be missed and remembered for his single mindedness and kind demeanor. To us he was a lovable friend.
Bob has been laid to rest at Tahoma National Cemetery. Rest Well...’neighbor Bob’.
