Obituary for Donald Alan Peterson
Donald Alan Peterson was born in 1934 on July 7th and died at age 84 on April 1st, 2019. He was raised with his brother, Harold Peterson, in the Seattle area and attended Ballard High School. After graduating, he had a short stint in the Navy and then worked with the City of Seattle in the maintenance department.
Soon after he began a long career with the Seattle Fire Department, became a captain and then acting Battalion Chief. During time off while working as a fireman, he ran his own business, Shoreline Tree and Fence Service, trimming and removing trees and building fences. After retiring he began his own business installing woodstoves and fireplaces.
Due to the flexibility of owning his own business he was able to take many vacations. He and his wife Virginia enjoyed traveling across the country in their motorhome, taking cruises, and skiing with his grandson Chris in Europe. Donald and his first wife Annette had two children, Mark Peterson and Karen (Peterson) Martinez. Donald’s second marriage (to Virginia,) along with her daughter Susan Neble, led to their adoption of Virginia’s grandson, Christopher Peach. Between marriages Donald had another daughter, Melody Lial. After 46 years of marriage with Virginia and after her death in 2008, Donald married Willa Peterson.
Donald had many interests and pursued them with a passion. In his younger years he was an avid outdoorsman, often fishing, hunting, motorcycling and camping. He enjoyed building fences, decks, and homes and even built his own boat in the 1960’s. He loved to chop firewood and had enough wood in his four-car garage to last for years. He and Virginia owned a trailer at Ocean Shores where other firefighter families, friends, and relatives would gather together. Skiing in Alpental became a major part of his life, as he spent many years as the director of the ski patrol. Donald also became interested in golf and spent time on courses down in Yuma, AZ with other firefighter snowbirds. While not on the golf course, he began wood working, carving hundreds of wood spirits which he called Don’s Knots.
Donald leaves behind his wife Willa and her extended family. He also leaves behind three children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His son Mark married to Karin (Maple Valley, WA) and their kids Brian, Evan, and Johanna (with baby on the way), his daughter Karen married to Paul (Benicia, CA) and their kids Jill, Julie, and Ryan, and great-grandson Ari. Melody married to Jerry (Everett, WA) and their kids and grandkids, Dwight married to Athena and their sons Jaylen and Jeremy, Jamie and his children Taylor, Teagan, and Talon, and Shannon married to Casey and their children Devon and Dani. He also left behind his grandson Christopher married to Anne Marie (Lynden, WA) and their kids Carter and Ava. Virginia Peterson, her daughter Susan Neble and her husband Dave Neble, passed away before Donald.
A celebration of life is scheduled for July 7th at the Maple Valley Community Center from 11:00-3:00 in Maple Valley, WA. We welcome your attendance.
