Obituary For Keith Byron Bassett

Keith Byron Bassett passed away on Sunday, August 8, 2021 after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest while hiking on Mount Rainier. He was 50 years old.

Keith was born on July 20, 1971, in Seattle, Washington to Byron and Lois Bassett. He grew up in Federal Way and graduated from Decatur High School. He attended the University of Oregon and graduated in 1997 with a BA in English and Medieval Studies. He went on to obtain an MBA from Washington State University in 2007, and most recently worked as a Sr. Program Manager for Disney Cloud Services in Seattle. Keith was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to Japan during high school and to Switzerland for a semester abroad during his MBA program; both trips were very formative for him.

In 1994, Keith married Maria Louise Schlumpf. They had 2 children, Emily Katherine (20) and Alexander Stewart (17). He loved being a dad more than anything and loved sharing his passions with his family. They enjoyed tinkering with technology together, watching science fiction and action movies, cooking elaborate feasts, and vacationing in snowy places like Mazama, Whistler and Banff to hike and cross-country ski.

Keith also loved sharing the outdoors with others. He has been the Scoutmaster for Boy Scout/Scouts BSA Troop 498 in Renton/Issaquah since 2016. The kids and families enjoyed his warm, welcoming personality – and endless supply of corny “dad jokes”. He inspired others to embrace ultralight hiking and led countless adventures around the Pacific Northwest. An annual favorite for him was leading groups to snow camp on Mt. Rainier – building ice caves and igloos to sleep in.

In addition to Maria, Emily and Alex, Keith is survived by his parents, Byron and Lois Bassett, and mother-in-law, Kathleen Schlumpf. Keith is also survived by his brother Greg Bassett, sisters-in-law Elisa Bassett, Tracie Schlumpf, and Roxanne Fulp as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father-in-law William Schlumpf as well as his 3 brothers-in-law, Jon Schlumpf, Frank Fulp and Russell Fulp.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Madeleine Sophie Catholic Church in Bellevue, WA on Wednesday, August 25th at 10AM. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no reception after Mass, and in accordance with King County health recommendations, masks are recommended for all individuals.

All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the 529 college savings plans that have been set up for Emily and Alex. https://www.ugift529.com/ (Emily: 94494P | Alex: 29UX79)

Keith passed away doing one of his most favorite activities: going out to the mountains where he could appreciate God through the beauty of nature. His family encourages you to go take a hike together in his memory.
