Derek Ray Nichols, beloved husband, father, son and brother passed on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, in Kent, Washington. Service will be held on Friday August 9, 2019 at Cady Cremation Service & Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00am. Interment will be at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, Washington.
Derek Ray Nichols was born October 26, 1964 in Waco Texas to parents Charles Arthur Nichols and Helen Marie Chew. His father Charles Arthur Nichols preceded him in death.
Derek was Baptized as Roman Catholic on April 27, 1975. He graduated from Valley High School in 1982. He received a football scholarship in 1982 to Northridge University. Derek left and was then recruited to Oregon Ducks on a football scholarship. Then in 1985 entered the United States Marine Corps. While in he received the following awards: National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation (w/1 star), Southwest Asia Service Medal (3rdAWD), Navy Achievement Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Good Conduct Medal (2ndAWD) and Navy Unit Commendation. He left the service as a SGT E-5 in 1994. He was very proud of the United States Marine Corps, also as the saying goes “Once A Marine Always A Marine.” See, he was still “A Very Proud Marine.”
He later on went to work in 2000 for The United Postal Service in several departments until his death. He possessed a lovable personality and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Derek was married to Elizabeth Hallmark. He has one son Eric Christopher Nichols. He was a loving husband, father, son and brother. His family was very important to him and the love, respect, and honor was given back to him by them all.
Derek leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife Elizabeth; his son Eric Nichols of Burien, Washington; his mother Helen Nichols of Las Vegas, Nevada; his sister Trina Nichols of Compton, California; three aunts, Verdie Tillis of Los Angeles, California; LouBerdia Smith of Waco, Texas; Deola Lax of Cleburne, Texas; two uncles Billie Chew and wife Joyce of Dallas, Texas; Fred Woods Jr of Ft. Worth, Texas; three cousins Melvin Smith Jr and wife Diane of Seagoville, Texas; Clyde Farrow Jr and wife LaVerne of Las Vegas, Nevada; Jamey Farrow of Rowlett, Texas; father and mother-in-law Adam and Eva Palka of Renton, Washington; and a host of cousins and other relatives and friends. Special friends of Derek were Roy Tatum, Ken Irei and Cory Jarmen.
